Vacuums need routine maintenance to perform properly, just like your car.  Would you run your vehicle for years without replacing the air or oil filter, changing the oil, or replacing the tires?  While vacuums don’t need oil to run (thank goodness, right?), they do have parts that need to be cleaned and/or replaced if you want your vacuum to do what it was designed to do: PICK UP, and KEEP IN dirt and allergens.  Stretched or worn out belts will keep the unit from picking up properly on carpet, and a dirty vacuum and/or dirty filters will send all that dirt you just picked up right back out into your breathing space.
